Foreign media reports that NVIDIA plans to build a research center in Shanghai, focusing on customized needs of Chinese customers.
The Financial Times reported on the 16th that, according to informed sources, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang discussed the plan with Shanghai officials during his visit to China last month and has already leased new office space in Shanghai. The sources revealed that the Shanghai municipal government has expressed preliminary support for the plan, and NVIDIA is also lobbying the US government for approval. The research center will focus on studying the specific needs of Chinese customers and meeting the complex technical requirements of Washington's export controls. However, core design and production will still be kept overseas. NVIDIA stated that they will not send any GPU designs to China for modifications to comply with export controls.
At the same time, the center is said to focus on the customized needs of Chinese customers and participate in global R&D projects, covering areas such as chip design verification, product optimization, and research on autonomous driving technology. Jensen Huang also hopes to engage with top artificial intelligence talents in China, and NVIDIA has already posted multiple job openings in Shanghai, including positions for engineers, aimed at guiding the development of next-generation deep learning hardware and software and developing and optimizing ASIC designs that can compete globally.
