On May 9th local time, German Chancellor Merkel visited Brussels, Belgium to hold separate meetings with EU Commission President von der Leyen, European Council President Costa, and NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg. This is also Merkel's first visit to Brussels as German Chancellor. On that day, von der Leyen and Merkel held talks and issued a joint statement. The statement stated that the EU is seeking to negotiate with the United States to achieve a balanced, fair, and mutually beneficial solution on tariff issues. Merkel expressed that the EU and the US should reach a reciprocal "zero tariffs" agreement.
