After US President Trump imposed a $100,000 application fee on the widely used H-1B visa program, Microsoft, Google parent company Alphabet, Amazon, and other tech companies warned employees holding the visa to return to the US and avoid traveling abroad on Saturday. A White House official on Saturday said that the fee only applies to new visa applications, not to visa renewals or existing visa holders, and will be implemented in the upcoming lottery process. Later on Saturday afternoon, the White House's account on X platform announced that Trump's announcement does not apply to existing visa holders and added: "This announcement does not affect the ability of any existing visa holder to travel to and from the US." Nevertheless, the uncertainty in the implementation and enforcement of the new regulations has caused confusion and anxiety in the US business community, and corporate and immigration lawyers are urging existing visa holders to exercise caution. Microsoft informed employees that the company understands "the uncertainty these developments have brought to many people" and added, "Although we can't currently answer all questions, we urge everyone to prioritize following the advice above." Amazon also warned H-4 dependent visa holders to stay in the US.
