On September 2nd, the Wall Street Journal reported that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin plans to begin a series of interviews on Friday to find the next candidate for chairman of the Federal Reserve. These sources said that the interview process will continue next week, and added that Mnuchin will conduct face-to-face interviews or contact candidates through video conferences. According to Mnuchin and his advisors, 11 people are vying for this position, including Federal Reserve Board members Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and former Federal Reserve Board members Kevin Warsh. After the interviews are completed, Mnuchin plans to recommend a final list of candidates to President Trump. Mnuchin had previously stated that he would begin looking for Jerome Powell's successor as Federal Reserve Chairman shortly after Labor Day.
