South Korean e-commerce impacted by US tariff policies: Korean postal service announced suspension of parcel delivery service to the US.
Due to the United States cancelling its small parcel tariff exemption policy starting on the 29th of this month, Korea Post has announced that it will temporarily stop accepting postal parcels bound for the United States. The reason is that the existing international postal network system is unable to cope with the additional declaration and tariff requirements imposed by the United States. Although the public can still choose high-end services offered by Korea Post in collaboration with private companies, or other private courier companies, the prices are relatively higher and they will soon face tariff payments. This change not only affects personal shipments, but also impacts Korea's e-commerce business targeted towards overseas consumers. According to Statistics Korea, last year's sales of Korea's e-commerce in foreign markets totaled approximately 1.7 trillion Korean won, with the US market accounting for 20%, ranking second. Data from the Korea Trade Association shows that most of Korea's cross-border e-commerce businesses are small and medium-sized enterprises or individual traders, and this policy change in the United States will have a greater impact on them.
