Bernd Lange, Chairman of the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament, stated during a press conference held in Brussels, Belgium on the 9th local time that the current trade dispute between the European Union and the United States still focuses on specific industries in the field of tariffs, especially steel, automobiles, copper, and possibly pharmaceutical products. Lange stated that the EU mainly exports drugs, automobiles, and machinery, therefore it is urgent to reach an agreement with the US as soon as possible to achieve a clear final result and decision. However, he also mentioned that the US has not committed to reducing tariffs and has not accepted the EU's proposed "freeze clause", which means no new trade restrictions will be implemented before the final agreement is reached. According to Lange, the EU is prepared for retaliatory measures, with the first phase set to take effect automatically on July 14th. He believes that the current Trump administration has not shown enough sincerity and the message being conveyed is more about "the language of power" than "the language of partnership". The EU calls for a rebuilding of a genuine partnership and the promotion of a global cooperation framework that respects the multilateral trading system. US President Trump stated on the 8th local time that a 50% new tariff will be imposed on all copper imported to the US, but did not reveal the specific date of when the new tariffs will take effect.
