Air France-KLM intends to increase its stake in SAS from 19.9% to 60.5%.
The Air France-KLM Group will begin to increase its minority stake in Scandinavian Airlines or SAS to 60.5%, with the aim of further strengthening the integration of the European aviation industry and better competing with rivals such as the Lufthansa Group and the parent company of British Airways, International Airlines Group. The Air France-KLM Group said in a statement that it will acquire shares held by Castellake Limited Partnership and Lind Invest, with the specific purchase amount depending on SAS's financial performance at the time of the transaction. The statement stated that the Danish government will continue to hold a 26.4% stake in SAS and retain its board seat. Air France-KLM Group CEO Ben Smith said in the statement, "We believe that through deeper integration within the Air France-KLM Group, the airline's potential will continue to be enhanced." In 2023, the Air France-KLM Group first announced that it would invest up to $1.445 billion to acquire up to 19.9% of Scandinavian Airlines. Under certain conditions, the company has the right to obtain majority ownership two years later. Scandinavian Airlines underwent a two-year restructuring after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, during which time the Air France-KLM Group acquired initial shares.
