500 employees and contractors evacuate the US diplomatic mission in Iraq.
An informed source said that as of Sunday morning, more than 500 staff and contractors had left the U.S. diplomatic mission in Iraq, with the evacuation plan already underway before the U.S. launched attacks on Iran. A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed on Sunday that "additional personnel" were evacuated from Iraq on Saturday as part of an ongoing effort to streamline operations. The spokesperson said, "These evacuations are a continuation of the process that began on June 12." That day, the U.S. embassy in Iraq was ordered to evacuate due to "heightened caution and escalating tensions in the region." They stated, "The embassy and consulate general remain open and are operating normally."
