Ethenea's analyst Luca Pesarini said in a report that the Federal Reserve's meeting this week will not be remembered for its interest rate path, but more as a test of the central bank's independence. Pesarini said, "The real challenge is not in conflicting economic data, but in political interference in monetary policy communication." Trump previously announced that he will soon appoint a successor to Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, with nearly a year left in Powell's term. This has put the concept of a "shadow chairman" in the spotlight. Pesarini said that if this news is announced, there is a possibility of conflicting monetary policy signals between the Federal Reserve officials and the designated successor, especially if the latter openly promotes rate cuts.
