Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce answers questions from reporters regarding relevant comments from the United States.
A journalist asked: Recently, there have been continuous reports from the US claiming that China has violated the consensus reached in the US-China-Japan Geneva Economic and Trade Talks. What is the Ministry of Commerce's response to this?
China has taken note of the situation. After the release of the "Joint Statement of the US-China-Japan Geneva Economic and Trade Talks" on May 12, in accordance with the consensus reached in the joint statement, China has cancelled or suspended relevant tariffs and non-tariff measures taken against the US in response to "equal tariffs". China takes a responsible attitude, treats the agreement seriously, implements it strictly, and actively upholds the consensus of the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks. China's defense of its rights is firm, and implementing the agreement is honest. On the other hand, after the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks, the US has successively introduced multiple discriminatory restrictions on China, including issuing export control guidelines for AI chips, ceasing sales of chip design software to China, and announcing the revocation of visas for Chinese students. These actions seriously violate the consensus reached in the phone call between the leaders of the two countries on January 17, seriously undermine the existing consensus of the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks, and seriously harm China's legitimate rights and interests. The US unilaterally continues to provoke new economic and trade frictions, exacerbating the uncertainty and instability of bilateral economic and trade relations. Instead of reflecting on itself, it groundlessly accuses China of violating the consensus, which is a serious distortion of the facts. China firmly rejects unreasonable accusations. The "Joint Statement of the US-China-Japan Geneva Economic and Trade Talks" is an important consensus reached by the two sides on the principles of mutual respect and equal consultation, and the results were hard-won. We urge the US and China to work towards each other, immediately correct the relevant wrongdoings, jointly uphold the consensus of the Geneva Economic and Trade Talks, and promote the healthy, stable, and sustainable development of the US-China economic and trade relations. If the US continues to harm China's interests by acting unilaterally, China will continue to take strong measures to defend its legitimate rights and interests.
