On May 5th local time, the parliamentary group of the CDU/CSU in the Bundestag elected Jens Spahn to replace Friedrich Merz as the new chairman. Jens Spahn has been serving in the Bundestag for over 20 years, and after the CDU's defeat in the 2021 general election, he served as one of the deputy leaders of the parliamentary group in the opposition period. Spahn is mainly involved in economic policy making. Prior to that, he also served as Minister of Health and Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance.
