Hong Kong government's statistics department: the total revenue of Hong Kong's manufacturing industry reached 300 billion Hong Kong dollars in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 23.3%.
In 2024, the total revenue of the manufacturing industry (including sales and other revenue) reached 300 billion Hong Kong dollars, an increase of 23.3% from 2023; the average total revenue per company in 2024 increased by 25.4% to 47.3 million Hong Kong dollars compared to 2023.
On November 27, the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong government released the results of the 2024 Annual Survey of Economic Activities by Industry - Manufacturing, Energy Supply, and Waste Management. The total revenue of the manufacturing industry in 2024 (including sales and other income) reached HK$300 billion, an increase of 23.3% compared to 2023; the average total revenue per company in 2024 increased by 25.4% to HK$47.3 million.
The total operating expenses and employee salaries of the manufacturing industry in 2024 amounted to HK$283.3 billion, an increase of 24.9% compared to 2023; the average operating expenses and employee salaries per company in 2024 increased by 27.1% to HK$44.7 million.
The total surplus of the manufacturing industry in 2024 (i.e. total revenue minus operating expenses and employee salaries) was HK$16.7 billion, an increase of 1.3% compared to 2023; the average surplus per company in 2024 increased by 3.1% to HK$2.6 million. The surplus of the manufacturing industry accounted for 5.6% of the total revenue in 2024, a decrease of 1.2 percentage points compared to 2023.
The value added by the manufacturing industry in 2024 was HK$37.6 billion, an increase of 1.7% compared to 2023. This value added roughly measures the contribution of the manufacturing industry to Hong Kong's GDP. The average value added per company in 2024 was HK$5.9 million, an increase of 3.4% compared to 2023.
In the manufacturing industry, the four main industry groups with the largest value added in 2024 were (1) Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products, (2) Metal Products, Machinery and Equipment, (3) Chemicals, Rubber, Plastics and Non-Metallic Mineral Products, and (4) Paper Products, Printing, and Reproduction of Recorded Media. Together, they accounted for 90.1% of the value added in the manufacturing industry.
The total revenue of the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Products industry in 2024 reached HK$47 billion, with operating expenses and employee salaries totaling HK$41 billion. The surplus was HK$6 billion, accounting for 12.7% of the industry's total revenue in 2024. The value added increased slightly by 0.7% to HK$13.1 billion compared to 2023.
The total revenue of the Metal Products, Machinery and Equipment industry in 2024 was HK$199.1 billion, with operating expenses and employee salaries totaling HK$195.2 billion. The surplus was HK$3.8 billion, accounting for 1.9% of the industry's total revenue in 2024. The value added increased by 3.7% to HK$10.4 billion compared to 2023.
The total revenue of the Chemicals, Rubber, Plastics and Non-Metallic Mineral Products industry in 2024 was HK$29.4 billion, with operating expenses and employee salaries totaling HK$25 billion. The surplus was HK$4.4 billion, accounting for 14.9% of the industry's total revenue in 2024. The value added increased by 7.3% to HK$6.9 billion compared to 2023.
The total revenue of the Paper Products, Printing and Reproduction of Recorded Media industry in 2024 was HK$10.5 billion, with operating expenses and employee salaries totaling HK$9.4 billion. The surplus was HK$1.2 billion, accounting for 11.0% of the industry's total revenue in 2024. The value added decreased slightly by 0.7% to HK$3.6 billion compared to 2023.
In addition to the manufacturing industry, this survey also included companies engaged in electricity and gas supply, as well as sewage treatment, waste management, and pollution prevention activities.
The total revenue of the electricity and gas supply industry in 2024 was HK$78.5 billion, a slight increase of 0.5% compared to 2023. The operating expenses and employee salaries in 2024 amounted to HK$49.7 billion, a decrease of 4.1% compared to 2023. The surplus in 2024 was HK$28.8 billion, an increase of 9.6% compared to 2023. The surplus of the electricity and gas supply industry accounted for 36.7% of the total revenue in 2024, an increase of 3.0 percentage points compared to 2023. The value added in 2024 reached HK$38 billion, an increase of 12.3% compared to 2023.
The total revenue of the sewage treatment, waste management, and pollution prevention activities in 2024 was HK$6.4 billion, an increase of 2.0% compared to 2023. The operating expenses and employee salaries in 2024 amounted to HK$5.5 billion, an increase of 2.1% compared to 2023. The surplus in 2024 was HK$800 million, an increase of 1.1% compared to 2023. The surplus of these activities accounted for 12.9% of the total revenue in 2024, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared to 2023. The value added in 2024 reached HK$1.9 billion, an increase of 6.4% compared to 2023.
