In 2024, the total operating expenses and employee salaries in the transportation, warehouse, and express delivery services industry amounted to HK$630.9 billion, an increase of 12.4% compared to 2023. The average operating expenses and employee salaries per company in 2024 increased by 13.9% to HK$23.1 million compared to 2023.
According to the results of the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong government's annual survey on economic activities for 2024 in the transportation, warehousing, and courier services industry, the total revenue (including operating income and other income) of the transportation, warehousing, and courier services industry in 2024 was HK$755.6 billion, an increase of 12.5% from 2023; the average total revenue per company in 2024 increased by 14.0% from 2023 to HK$27.6 million.
The total operating expenses and employee salaries of the transportation, warehousing, and courier services industry in 2024 amounted to HK$630.9 billion, an increase of 12.4% from 2023; the average operating expenses and employee salaries per company in 2024 increased by 13.9% from 2023 to HK$23.1 million.
The total surplus of the transportation, warehousing, and courier services industry in 2024 (total revenue minus operating expenses and employee salaries) was HK$124.7 billion, an increase of 13.4% from 2023; the average total surplus per company rose from HK$4.0 million in 2023 to HK$4.6 million in 2024. The industry's total surplus accounted for 16.5% of total revenue in 2024, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from 2023.
The industry value added of the transportation, warehousing, and courier services industry in 2024 was HK$197.3 billion, an increase of 12.0% from 2023. Industry value added can roughly measure the contribution of these industries to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The average industry value added per company in 2024 increased by 13.4% from 2023 to HK$7.2 million.
According to the survey results, there were approximately 27,300 companies engaged in the transportation, warehousing, and courier services industry in 2024, with a total of around 209,900 employees, averaging 7.7 employees per company.
In the transportation, warehousing, and courier services industry, the five major industry subgroups with the highest industry value added in 2024 are: (1) air transport and auxiliary air transport services, (2) cross-border water transport, (3) land passenger transport, (4) other transport auxiliary activities, and (5) land freight transport. Together, they account for 87.5% of the industry's added value.
In the air transport and auxiliary air transport services industry, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$165.8 billion, while operating expenses and employee salaries totaled HK$132.2 billion. The total surplus decreased from HK$35.1 billion in 2023 to HK$33.7 billion in 2024. The total surplus accounted for 20.3% of total revenue in 2024. Industry value added increased by 4.9% from 2023 to HK$62.6 billion.
In the cross-border water transport industry, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$157.9 billion, while operating expenses and employee salaries totaled HK$119.9 billion. The total surplus increased significantly from HK$26.5 billion in 2023 to HK$37.9 billion in 2024. The total surplus accounted for 24.0% of total revenue in 2024. Industry value added also saw a significant increase of 38.7% from 2023 to HK$40.6 billion.
In the land passenger transport industry, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$62.7 billion, while operating expenses and employee salaries totaled HK$49.5 billion. The total surplus increased from HK$11.3 billion in 2023 to HK$13.2 billion in 2024. The total surplus accounted for 21.1% of total revenue in 2024. Industry value added increased by 11.2% from 2023 to HK$32.1 billion.
In the other transport auxiliary activities industry (mainly including freight forwarding and ship brokerage), the total revenue in 2024 was HK$264.3 billion, while operating expenses and employee salaries totaled HK$237.2 billion. The total surplus increased from HK$22.2 billion in 2023 to HK$27.1 billion in 2024. The total surplus accounted for 10.3% of total revenue in 2024. Industry value added increased by 15.2% from 2023 to HK$26.7 billion.
In the land freight transport industry, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$26.8 billion, while operating expenses and employee salaries totaled HK$24.4 billion. The total surplus increased from HK$1.9 billion in 2023 to HK$2.4 billion in 2024. The total surplus accounted for 9.1% of total revenue in 2024. Industry value added increased by 15.2% from 2023 to HK$10.7 billion.
