President Donald Trump announced new industry-specific tariffs on heavy-duty trucks, kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets, as well as upholstered furniture, further expanding his trade agenda of boosting domestic industry by raising import taxes. Trump posted on the Truth Social platform on Thursday, announcing plans to impose a 25% tariff on imported heavy-duty trucks starting from October 1st. He wrote, "In order to protect our great heavy-duty truck manufacturers from unfair external competition, I will impose a 25% tariff on all 'heavy-duty trucks' produced in other parts of the world from October 1, 2025." "In this way, our great large truck manufacturers, such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, Mack Trucks and other companies, will be protected from external disturbances." He added, "For many reasons, we need our truck companies to remain financially healthy and strong, but most importantly, for national security!" He also announced a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets, and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, both of which will also take effect from October 1. Trump also said, "We will impose a 100% tariff on any brand-name or patented drugs, unless the relevant companies are building pharmaceutical plants in the United States." Trump said the tariffs will take effect from October 1. Trump said that if construction has already begun on a plant, those drugs will be exempt from tariffs.
