Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association on Thursday showed that Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD's new car sales in the EU market in August were three times higher than the same period last year, surpassing American competitor Tesla for the second consecutive month. Thanks to the growth of the market driven by plug-in hybrid cars and electric vehicles, Stellantis' European car sales recorded growth for the first time in over a year. ACEA data showed that car sales in the EU, UK, and European Free Trade Association increased by 4.7% in August, reaching 800,000 vehicles. Volkswagen and Renault saw a 4.8% and 7.8% increase in car registrations, respectively; Stellantis increased by 2.2%, marking its first growth since February 2024. Tesla's sales in the EU declined by 36.6%, with its market share shrinking from 2% a year ago to 1.2%. BYD's sales surged by 201.3%, with a market share of 1.3%. Similarly, SAIC Group from China saw a sharp increase of 59.4% in August sales, with a market share of 1.9% so far this year, making it the tenth best-selling car company in the EU. Overall car sales in the EU increased by 5.3%. Registrations of pure electric cars, hybrid cars, and plug-in hybrid cars each increased by 30.2%, 54.5%, and 14.1%, respectively, accounting for a total of 62.2% of EU car registrations, higher than the 52.8% in the same period last year.
