The French National Commission on Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) issued a statement on September 3 announcing a fine of 325 million against Google for improperly displaying ads to Gmail users and using cookies without the consent of Google account users. A Google spokesperson responded by saying that users have always been able to control the ads they see in the company's products, and they are evaluating CNIL's penalty. The spokesperson stated, "Over the past two years, we have made further improvements to address the issues raised by CNIL, including adding a one-click option to opt out of personalized ads when creating a Google account, and adjusting the presentation of ads in Gmail."
