On September 2nd, the French Meteorological Department issued a bulletin stating that the average temperature in the country during the summer of 2025 was 22.2 degrees Celsius, which is 1.9 degrees Celsius higher than the usual average for the same period. This summer was the third hottest on record, only surpassed by the summers of 2003 and 2022. According to the bulletin, France experienced two heatwaves this summer, totaling 27 days. In terms of the number of heatwave days, this summer ranked the second highest on record, following only 2022 with 33 days. In June, temperatures were exceptionally hot, with the average temperature being 3.3 degrees Celsius higher than the usual average for that period. In July and August, the average temperatures were also 0.9 degrees Celsius and 1.4 degrees Celsius higher than the usual averages for those months. The consecutive heatwaves exacerbated soil drought and made vegetation more vulnerable.
