Hong Kong Observatory: No. 1 standby signal to be maintained until at least 9 am tomorrow.
Typhoon signal no. 1 is now in effect. The Hong Kong Observatory stated that in the past few hours, Tropical Storm "Swordfish" has continued to move steadily in a westward direction. Strong winds have started to blow in the offshore and high areas of southern Hong Kong. According to current forecasts, "Swordfish" will come closest to Hong Kong tonight, passing about 500 kilometers south of Hong Kong, while also strengthening further. The southern part of Hong Kong and nearby waters will experience strong winds for the rest of today until tomorrow morning. The Observatory will closely monitor changes in local wind speeds. Unless "Swordfish" significantly strengthens rapidly or takes a more northerly path, the signal no. 1 will be maintained until at least 9 a.m. tomorrow. The outer rain bands associated with "Swordfish" are affecting the waters south of Hong Kong and gradually moving closer to the Guangdong coast. Hong Kong is expected to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds tonight and tomorrow, with heavy rain initially expected. Rough seas are expected, and the Observatory advises citizens to stay away from the shore and avoid water activities.
