Elon Musk's Tesla is facing a federal investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States, as this American automotive safety agency has found that the company did not report traffic accidents as required. According to documents released on Thursday by the NHTSA website, the agency's Defects Investigation Office "found multiple accident reports submitted by Tesla," with some accidents "occurring months or even longer before the date reported to the agency." The NHTSA stated in its explanation of the investigation that the delayed reports may "stem from Tesla's data collection issues, which Tesla claims have now been resolved." The agency will now conduct an "audit query" to confirm whether Tesla complied with reporting requirements and to "assess the reasons for potential report delays, the extent of delays, and the mitigating measures Tesla has implemented to address these issues." The NHTSA will also investigate whether Tesla has omitted any previous related collision accidents and whether the reports submitted to safety regulatory agencies "include all necessary and obtainable data."
