The US Food and Drug Administration announced on its website on the 19th that it has requested the American retail giant Walmart to remove three batches of its private label frozen shrimp due to the risk of radioactive contamination. The FDA stated that customs had detected radioactive isotope cesium-137 in containers at four ports in the United States and, after investigation, found this radioactive contaminant in a shrimp sample from a company in Indonesia. Some of Walmart's private label frozen shrimp is sourced from this company. The announcement stated that the level of cesium-137 detected in the frozen shrimp was 68 becquerels per kilogram, well below the FDA's intervention standard of 1200 becquerels per kilogram. However, over time, low levels of radiation may still cause health problems for consumers.
