Brazilian President Lula criticizes US human rights report as "ignorant"
On August 13 local time, Brazilian President Lula strongly responded to the criticism of the human rights situation in Brazil as "worsening" in the US State Department's "Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2024," stating that the report is full of ignorance about the Brazilian justice system. In the report, the US government alleged that Brazil is "persecuting" former President Bolsonaro and "allowing Supreme Court judges to act arbitrarily, infringing on the rights of far-right supporters." Lula responded by saying that this shows ignorance of the Brazilian constitution. Lula stated that Bolsonaro is not on trial because of accusations from political enemies, and criticized Trump's attempt to pressure the Brazilian justice system by sanctioning the judge in Bolsonaro's case, stating that such behavior "does not befit the leader of the world's largest economy in terms of civility."
Regarding the Brazil-US trade dispute, Lula expressed willingness to negotiate on trade disputes with the United States, but will not give up sovereignty. Brazil has appointed negotiators, but the US has not sent anyone for talks yet.
