On August 9th, Foshan City held a press conference on the prevention and control of chikungunya fever. Officials at the conference stated that currently, the chikungunya fever epidemic in Foshan City is showing a noticeable downward trend, with the daily number of new reported cases decreasing from a peak of 674 cases on July 19th to 148 cases on August 8th. Since July 29th, there has been a continuous downward trend, with the number of new cases dropping below 200 for the past 5 days. The number of new cases in villages and communities affected by the epidemic has also been steadily decreasing, and the prevention and control efforts have achieved preliminary results. In this current epidemic, Foshan has not seen any severe or fatal cases, and over 90% of cases have recovered. Officials at the conference also mentioned that clinically, the chikungunya fever cases are all mild, mainly presenting symptoms such as joint pain, fever, and rash. According to statistics based on clinical characteristics, the occurrence rates of these symptoms are 90.1%, 83.1%, and 70% respectively. Symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, and nausea are more common in individuals over 65 years old. The symptoms of most patients can subside within about a week, and no serious complications have been observed. A small number of people may experience longer-lasting joint pain, requiring further follow-up. The oldest patient to be discharged from the hospital in Foshan was 95 years old, and the youngest was 40 days old. Chikungunya fever mainly affects the joints, so recovered patients should pay attention to balancing rest and activity. Within 3 months of the onset of the disease, it is important to take care of the joints and avoid heavy lifting, climbing, and long-distance running. It is advisable to wear protective gear during activities to prevent sustained injury. Patients with prolonged symptoms can seek further rehabilitation treatment at outpatient rehabilitation clinics.
