The Secretary-General of the China Automobile Dealers Association, Cui Dongshu, stated in a document on August 7th that from January to June 2025, 220,000 imported cars were brought into the country, a 32% year-on-year decrease. This is an unusually large decline for the first half of the year. In June, 43,000 imported cars were brought in, a 30% decrease compared to the same period last year and a 9% decrease from May. Following the peak of 1.43 million imported cars in 2014, import growth stabilized slightly in 2016-2017, but has been continuously declining since 2018. Import volumes have been sharply decreasing since 2024, with only 700,000 cars imported for the whole year, a 12% decrease year-on-year. Currently, there is still significant pressure causing a continued contraction in imported cars.
