Under the influence of climate, the coverage rate of hard corals in the Great Barrier Reef has significantly decreased.
The Australian Institute of Marine Science released a report on the 6th local time, stating that the coverage of hard corals on the Great Barrier Reef has significantly declined due to factors such as climate change. According to an annual report from the institute, the average coverage of hard corals in the monitoring area in 2025 decreased by about 14% to 30% compared to 2024, and the coverage of individual coral reefs even decreased by more than 70%. The report stated that the heatwave during the Southern Hemisphere summer of 2024 was the main reason for the decrease in hard coral coverage.
