The first wave of copper tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump will have a significant impact on imported products worth over $15 billion last year, highlighting the potential inflationary effect on American manufacturers. The announcement of a 50% import tariff last week has caused turmoil in the global copper market, with US copper futures experiencing record declines, as Trump unexpectedly exempted key products. However, a large number of trade products will still be affected by the tariffs. The list of products to be taxed at 50% was published in the US Federal Gazette on Monday. According to estimates, the taxed list includes semi-finished products such as copper wire, copper pipes, and copper bars, with imports of $7.7 billion last year, as well as copper cable products commonly used for telephone or internet connections, with similar import levels.
