Japanese and South Korean stock markets closed.

The Nikkei 225 index closed up 258.84 points, or 0.64%, at 40,549.54 points; the Topix index closed up 0.7% at 2,936.54 points. The KOSPI index rose 1.60% to 3,198.0 points.
