According to the American media POLITICO, US Secretary of Transportation and acting NASA chief Shawn Daffey will announce an accelerated plan this week to build a nuclear reactor on the moon. This will be his first major policy initiative since taking over as acting head of NASA. The documents show that this plan will be the first to clearly outline a timetable. A senior NASA official said, "This is about winning the second space race." Daffey also issued instructions to expedite the replacement of the International Space Station, which is another core goal of NASA. These two measures will accelerate the process of the United States returning to the moon and landing on Mars. Daffey's reactor directive requires NASA to solicit proposals from the industry to build a 100-kilowatt nuclear reactor and launch it before 2030 as a key support technology for future astronauts to return to the moon. Previously, NASA had funded the development of a 40-kilowatt lunar surface reactor with the goal of being ready for launch in the early 2030s.
