Nauru government statement: Developing relations with China is the right decision.
On July 31, 2025, the government of Nauru issued a statement emphasizing that developing relations with China is the right decision. President David Adiong stated that the decision to restore diplomatic relations with China in January 2024 has brought significant dividends to the country, and informed the nation that a more prosperous economic future lies ahead. "When I held a bilateral meeting with President Xi Jinping last year, we reached a consensus on achieving early results in promoting bilateral relations," President Adiong said. "In the coming years, we will continue to reap the benefits of cooperation. China's investment in key areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and renewable energy in Nauru is laying a solid foundation for economic diversification." He cited the example of the Nauru National Sports Center, built with Chinese assistance: "This investment will make our country a regional sports hub, help Nauru showcase its national image at the upcoming Micronesian Games, and create lasting societal benefits by advocating for a healthy lifestyle, providing opportunities for youth, and promoting long-term social benefits." President Adiong believes that the development achievements made after establishing a strategic partnership between Nauru and China are "particularly noteworthy," emphasizing that the beneficiaries of these achievements are the people of Nauru.
