Russian airline has been targeted by a cyber attack, hacker groups from Ukraine and Belarus claim responsibility.
On July 28th local time, Aeroflot, the Russian international airline, announced that dozens of flights have been cancelled due to a malfunction caused by a cyber attack on the company's information system. Ukrainian and Belarusian hacker groups have claimed responsibility for the incident. Aeroflot stated that most of the affected flights were domestic flights within Russia, but some flights to Belarus and Armenia were also impacted. Many passengers were stranded at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow due to flight delays and cancellations. In a joint statement, the two hacker groups from Ukraine and Belarus claimed responsibility for the cyber attack and said they "destroyed" around 7,000 servers of Aeroflot, as well as breached critical systems. The statement also mentioned that the attack was in support of the Ukrainian side. So far, Ukraine has not commented on the incident. Aeroflot stated that an expert team is working to minimize risks and restore normal operations as soon as possible. Passengers on cancelled flights can apply for a refund or reschedule their flights within the next 10 days. Currently, the Moscow prosecutor's office is investigating the incident. Kremlin spokesman Peskov expressed shock at the cyber attack and stated that Russia will clarify the information and wait for relevant authorities to provide a reasonable explanation.
