IMF's number two figure, Guptanath, will resign at the end of August.
The International Monetary Fund said in a statement that its number two official, Gita Gopinath, will leave at the end of August to return to Harvard University. The IMF stated that IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva will appoint Gopinath's successor at the "appropriate time". Gopinath joined the IMF in 2019 as the organization's first female Chief Economist, and was promoted to First Deputy Managing Director in January 2022. The U.S. Treasury Department did not immediately comment on this. The selection of the IMF Managing Director traditionally comes from European countries, while the selection of the First Deputy Managing Director is recommended by the U.S. Treasury Department.
