On July 15, spokesperson Lin Jian presided over a routine press conference. Reuters journalist: The President of Paraguay has stated that preparations are being made for next month's "visit" by Lai Ching-te. Lai is also expected to "visit" Belize and is likely to transit through the United States. Has China demanded that the U.S. not allow Lai to transit? What is the U.S. response to this? Lin Jian: Regarding Paraguay maintaining so-called "diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan region of China, China has repeatedly stated its firm stance. The One China principle is a basic norm of international relations and a common consensus in the international community. Adhering to the One China principle is the right thing to do internationally, is in line with the will of the people, and is the overall trend. Recently, many Latin American countries, including various sectors of Paraguay, have visited China. Their biggest realization is that Paraguay cannot continue to "turn away" from China, be an "oddity" in the international community, and should recognize the One China principle early on and make changes in its relations with China. We advise the current government of Paraguay not to go against the tide of the times, be used by separatist forces in Taiwan, but to listen to the voices of the people of Paraguay and make a truly correct choice that is in line with the fundamental and long-term interests of their own people. We also hope that relevant Latin American and Caribbean countries recognize the overall trend, carefully handle Taiwan-related issues, and early on join the big family of friendly cooperation between China and Latin America. Regarding the issue you mentioned of Lai Ching-te potentially transiting through the United States, China firmly opposes any form of official exchanges between the U.S. and Taiwan, firmly opposes Taiwan authorities' leaders traveling to the U.S. under any pretext or reason, and firmly opposes the U.S. in any form of tolerating and supporting separatist elements and their actions. The U.S. should recognize the high sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, abide by the One China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the U.S., and handle the Taiwan issue with caution.
