On July 7th, Apple officially appealed against the 500 million euro fine from the European Union, stating that the penalty was "unprecedented" and that the regulatory agency's demand for Apple to modify its fee system for the App Store was "illegal." Apple released a statement saying, "We believe that the decision of the European Commission and the unprecedented fine they have levied goes far beyond the scope of the law."
