On June 24th, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the UK proposed designating Google as having a "strategic market status" in the general search and search advertising sectors. If ultimately designated, the CMA would be able to introduce targeted measures to address specific issues Google faces in providing search services in the UK. The agency will consult on the proposal before making a final decision in October. Google responded to the proposal by stating that it presents a significant challenge to the company's key business areas in the UK and expressed concerns that the CMA's scope of assessment is too broad and lacks focus. Google stated that they will continue to work constructively with the CMA.
