The German Ministry of Economy expressed regret on June 20, 2025 that ArcelorMittal has decided not to proceed with two key hydrogen energy steel projects in Germany. The project was originally eligible for approximately 1.3 billion euros (approximately $1.5 billion) in funding from the German government. The ministry stated in an email statement that it is important to note that no funds have been paid yet, meaning that no money needs to be recovered. ArcelorMittal cited the high energy costs in Germany as the reason for abandoning plans to convert the two factories into carbon-neutral production facilities.
