According to the latest information from the Smart Finance and Economics app, on June 20th, the Hong Kong government's Census and Statistics Department announced the consumer price index for May 2025. Based on the composite consumer price index, the overall consumer price in Hong Kong in May 2025 increased by 1.9% compared to the same month a year ago, which is slightly lower than the corresponding increase in April 2025 (2.0%). Excluding the impact of all one-off relief measures by the government, the year-on-year increase in the composite consumer price index in May 2025 (i.e. the basic inflation rate) is 1.0%, also lower than in April 2025 (1.3%). The narrowing of the year-on-year increase is mainly due to the decline in transportation expenses and tourist expenses entering and leaving Hong Kong.
