The Financial Intelligence APP learned that according to Basel III, gold is currently not classified as a High-Quality Liquid Asset (HQLA). However, the performance of gold during crises is comparable to that of medium and long-term US Treasuries. In this context, analysis from the World Gold Council indicates that while gold has not been officially named as a High-Quality Liquid Asset, it actually possesses all of its characteristics. In conclusion, despite gold not being officially classified as a HQLA under Basel III and no announcements regarding future revisions, there is ample evidence to suggest that gold's actual performance is no different from HQLA. Whenever the rules are revised, the World Gold Council believes that regulators need to reconsider their initial decision and reassess the positioning of gold.
