OpenAI has secured a $200 million pilot project contract that will help the U.S. Department of Defense determine how to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to a range of administrative and security tasks. The U.S. Department of Defense disclosed the one-year contract on Monday, marking the latest effort by OpenAI to sell its technology to the U.S. government. In a blog post on Monday, OpenAI wrote that the contract is the first project undertaken by a new entity called OpenAI for Government within the company. OpenAI will work with the U.S. Department of Defense to propose methods for how AI can assist in administrative tasks, such as accessing healthcare services for U.S. military personnel and helping to prevent cyber attacks.
