Under the sweeping tide of mobile payments, ATMs are exiting the stage of history at a rate of approximately 300,000 units every 5 years. Data from the "General Situation of Payment System Operation in 2024" released by the People's Bank of China in February of this year shows that by the end of 2024, the number of ATMs in China was 802,700, a decrease of 42,800 units from the previous year. There were 5.70 ATMs per ten thousand people, a 4.83% decrease compared to the previous year. Financial industry analysts state that ATMs will not disappear completely. Although the usage of cash is decreasing, there are still special situations where it is needed. Regulators have always emphasized the necessity to accept cash, but the gradual reduction of ATMs is an undeniable fact.
