Wang Yi discusses the outcomes of the trilateral meeting between China, Afghanistan, and Pakistan foreign ministers
On May 21, 2025, Wang Yi, member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, chaired an informal meeting of the China-Afghanistan-Pakistan trilateral foreign ministers in Beijing. Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dar and Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Mutaqi attended the meeting. The foreign ministers of the three countries positively evaluated the outcomes of the trilateral dialogue between China, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and exchanged views on further exploring the potential of the trilateral mechanism and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation and friendly exchanges.
Wang Yi summarized the outcomes of the meeting, mainly highlighting seven points:
1. Enhancing political mutual trust and maintaining good neighborly relations. China supports Afghanistan and Pakistan in following development paths that suit their national conditions and supports them in upholding sovereignty, security, and national dignity.
2. Utilizing the role of the China-Afghanistan-Pakistan trilateral foreign ministers dialogue mechanism, and agreeing to hold the sixth round of trilateral foreign ministers dialogue in Kabul as soon as possible.
3. Enhancing exchanges and strengthening diplomatic contacts. Afghanistan and Pakistan expressed their willingness to enhance the level of diplomatic relations and agreed in principle to exchange ambassadors soon. China welcomed this and expressed readiness to continue assisting in improving Afghanistan-Pakistan relations.
4. Deepening cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative, extending the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to Afghanistan, and strengthening regional connectivity network construction.
5. Promoting practical cooperation, expanding cooperation areas, and raising the level of cooperation. China and Pakistan support Afghanistan in reconstruction and development, are willing to expand trade with Afghanistan, and help Afghanistan enhance its self-reliant development capacity.
6. Opposing all forms of terrorism, conducting law enforcement and security cooperation, working together to combat terrorist forces of mutual concern, and remaining vigilant against external interference in the internal affairs of regional countries.
7. Safeguarding regional peace and stability, and striving to create a favorable external environment for their respective development and rejuvenation.
