Chinese automotive companies are accelerating their overseas expansion. How to protect intellectual property rights? Three key points need to be considered.
The China Automotive Technology Research Center released the "2025 China Automotive Overseas Intellectual Property Protection Research Report" yesterday, providing professional guidance for Chinese car companies to better enter the overseas market. The report shows that the proportion of overseas patent applications for China's independent automotive brands accounts for about 30% of the total patent applications, with the proportion of valid patents increasing by 12 percentage points compared to the previous year, reaching 47%, demonstrating the continuous improvement of the innovation capabilities of independent brands going global. Wang Junlei, Chief Expert of the China Automotive Technology Research Center, stated: "The patent layout for car companies going global must be accurately implemented, focusing on three areas of synchronization: understanding the local intellectual property environment and policy orientation, establishing patent litigation and licensing teams, and connecting with local overseas intellectual property resources, ultimately achieving an improvement in the quality of overseas patents from quantity."
