Brazil reports first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in commercial poultry farms.
The Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil issued a bulletin on May 16, confirming a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus infection in poultry at a commercial farm in the south of the country. This is the first time that a high pathogenic avian influenza outbreak has been discovered in a commercial farming system in the country. The farm is located in Montenegro, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and is mainly engaged in poultry breeding. According to the agricultural department of Rio Grande do Sul, the virus found this time is the H5N1 type of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus.
