Sun Zhuangzhi, director of the Institute of Russian, Eastern European and Central Asian Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, analyzed in an interview that the key reason for the different evaluations of the negotiation results by both Russia and Ukraine is that both sides have different focal points in the negotiations. Ukraine has made a pessimistic and negative evaluation for several reasons. On one hand, Ukraine hopes for an immediate ceasefire and seeks consensus on key issues such as territory, but Russia did not make any concessions this time. On the other hand, Ukraine hopes that Europe will continue to pressure Russia, as Europe had previously indicated that if the negotiations were unsuccessful, new sanctions would be imposed on Russia. Russia has a more positive attitude towards the negotiations for several reasons. On one hand, the talks were proposed by Russia, successfully held, and largely followed Russia's conditions, such as using Russian for dialogue, with the Russian and Turkish delegations in formal attire and the Ukrainian delegation mostly in casual attire. The negotiations also lasted for two hours, allowing for comprehensive communication. On the other hand, Russia expressed a desire to continue the dialogue, also aiming to send a signal to the United States. In Istanbul, Russian and American representatives also held a meeting. Sun Zhuangzhi believes that direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will continue in the future. Although these negotiations may not help much in resolving the conflict substantively, they can help ease tensions and create some conditions for achieving a ceasefire in the next step.
