Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives proposed on Monday to eliminate the tax credits for electric vehicles as part of a broad tax reform bill and to repeal fuel efficiency regulations aimed at encouraging automakers to produce more zero-emission vehicles. The proposal will be discussed at a hearing in the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday and would end the $7,500 tax credit for new electric vehicles and $4,000 tax credit for used electric vehicles on December 31st, with the exception of automakers who have not yet sold 200,000 electric vehicles, who will keep the tax credit for one more year. Genevieve Cullen, president of the Electric Drive Transportation Association, criticized the proposal, saying that "abandoning America's leadership in energy innovation by cutting federal investments in electrification is a disastrously short-sighted move."
