The Mexican government is suing Google Maps for labeling the Gulf of Mexico as the Bay of America.
Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum said on the 9th that the Mexican government has filed a lawsuit against the technology giant Google for labeling the entire Gulf of Mexico as the "American Gulf" in its digital maps. Sinbaum emphasized during a press conference that the Mexican government has requested Google to strictly adhere to the names approved by the US government, which allows the US to name its continental shelf as the "American Gulf," but the sovereignty belongs to Mexico and Cuba, so the waters should be named the Gulf of Mexico and the US has no right to rename it. The Mexican government believes that Google has improperly expanded the scope of its labeling and has openly disregarded international law and the bilateral treaties between the US and Mexico.
