G7 foreign ministers issue joint statement calling on India and Pakistan to exercise restraint.
On the 9th local time, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven and the EU High Representative issued a press release strongly condemning the attack that took place on April 22 in the Indian-controlled region of Kashmir, and urged India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint. The press release stated, "Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability. We are deeply concerned about the safety of civilians on both sides. We call for an immediate de-escalation of the situation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue to achieve a peaceful outcome. We will continue to closely monitor developments and support a swift and lasting diplomatic solution." The shooting incident in the Indian-controlled Kashmir region on April 22 resulted in significant casualties. India accused Pakistan of being involved in the incident, while Pakistan denied any involvement. Subsequently, India took harsh measures against Pakistan, such as suspending an important water distribution treaty, closing border crossings, and expelling Pakistani personnel; Pakistan, in response, announced multiple retaliatory measures and also closed its airspace to Indian airlines, suspended all trade with India, among other actions. There have been multiple clashes in the Kashmir region between the two sides.
