On May 4th, local time, the outgoing German Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, told the media that she expects the number of asylum seekers in Germany this year to drop to the lowest level in over a decade. Faeser stated that if illegal immigration continues to decrease significantly as it has over the past two years, the number of asylum seekers in Germany this year could reach around 100,000. According to the German Federal Office for Migration, the last time the number of asylum applications was less than 100,000 was in 2012. In 2024, the number of applications was slightly lower at 251,000, compared to around 352,000 the previous year. Faeser's successor, the incoming German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, has promised that shortly after taking office, he will strengthen border controls in Germany and increase the number of people refused entry.
