Togo's parliament elected Detof as president.
The Togolese Parliament elected Jean-Louis Savi De Tove as the first President of the country after implementing a parliamentary system of government. The Togolese Parliament consists of two chambers, the National Assembly and the Senate, with a total of 174 seats, of which 150 were present on the day of the election. De Tove was the only candidate and was elected with 150 votes in favor. After the election, De Tove was sworn in as President.
