Energy services company Baker Hughes said in its closely watched report on Friday that U.S. energy companies reduced the number of oil and gas rigs for the first time in three weeks. As an early indicator of future production, the number of oil and gas rigs decreased by three to 584 in the week ending May 2. The drop in rig count this week decreased the total number of rigs by 21 compared to the same period last year, a 3% decrease. This week, the number of oil rigs decreased by four to 479, while the number of gas rigs increased by two to 101.
