The Social Democratic Party of Germany voted in favor of the agreement to form a coalition government with the conservative party led by Friedrich Merz, clearing the way for the leader of the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union to be confirmed as Chancellor next week. The Social Democrats released a press release in Berlin on Wednesday, stating that about 85% of their party members who participated in the online vote supported the government formation blueprint reached earlier this month. Of the roughly 360,000 members, 56% participated in the vote, with around 15% voting against. The German Federal Parliament will vote next Tuesday to elect Merz as Chancellor, after which he will be sworn in with his cabinet members. The Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union have already nominated 10 ministers, with the Social Democrats expected to nominate 7 ministers on Monday. The 69-year-old Merz, a federal parliament member from the Christian Democratic Union and a former corporate lawyer, has no prior government experience. He is set to take over the management of Europe's largest economy, but faces domestic and geopolitical turmoil.
