This is probably not a good sign for American ports: Moody's recently revised its outlook for US ports in 2025 from "stable" to "negative" in its latest report. The agency predicts a sharp decline in container throughput at US ports against the backdrop of tightening global trade. Data from international organizations and professional shipping agencies also do not paint a positive picture for the future of US freight volume. The World Trade Organization (WTO) stated in its latest report on "Global Trade Outlook and Statistics" that, after adjusting baseline forecasts to account for the impact of recent tariff announcements and trade policy uncertainty, it expects a significant decrease in commodity trade volume in the North American region this year. Exports are expected to decrease by 12.6% (previously forecasted to grow by 2.2%), while imports are expected to decline by 9.6% (Yicai).
